Great Hypostyle Hall

Temple of Hathor - Temples - The Buildings - Builders & Buildings

“Castle of the Sistrum” or “Pr Hathor”, the House of Hathor

The Hypostyle Hall has 24 columns all in the style of the Goddess Hathor’s face and with a Sistrum which was often associated with the Goddess. The hieroglyphs which are decorated on every surface apart from the Hall’s floor are dominated by the blue tint which is thought to have been the colour of Goddess Hathor’s Wig.

The ceiling, in particular, is exquisite in its details and its representations of the Ancient Egyptians stars sequences, the deities, especially of the sun Goddess Nut – whose purpose was to swallow (dusk) and then give birth (dawn) again to the sun disc – and zodiac signs.
