Greek PeriodEgypt Through Time - What is Ancient Egypt?
Greek Egypt 332 to 30 BC
The Ptolemaic Dynasties
Alexander the Great occupied Egypt and declared himself Pharaoh
His General, Ptolemy, ruled after his death and established a Dynasty which lasted for nearly 300 years
Monuments erected during this time included
Edfu Temple : Dendera Temple and Zodiac : Pharos of Alexandria : Temple of Isis at Philae
The Greek Period commenced with the welcomed invasion of Egypt by Alexander the Great, but primarily this Dynasty was filled with the family of General Ptolemy.
The Ptolemies ruled Egypt from 305BC to 30BC, consistently following the pattern of older Dynasties by having the Pharaohs marry their own siblings which did little for the physical and mental health of the rulers.
