Pharaoh Alexander the GreatLate Period - Egypt Through Time - What is Ancient Egypt?
The Infamous Alexander the Great is well remembered and celebrated in Egypt, especially as he founded one of his namesake cities here in 331 BC, Alexandria. He was born to King Philip II of Macedon and Queen Olympias of Epirus in 356 BC in Pella, Ancient Greece.
He came to the Throne aged 20 and is perhaps best known for his military campaigning that ended the Persian Empire and made him ruler from Northwest India through to Greece, including Egypt without ever being defeated.
He is known to have died in Babylon in 323 BC and is thought to have been buried in Egypt, despite his Tomb not having been found. Egypt was handed to one of his closest General’s, the new Pharaoh Ptolemy I.
